Growing Up Male or Female
The thesis of “Growing up Male or Female” by Brown and Hood (2002) is that society teaches children their gender roles. The purpose of this article is to men or women are not made by birth, but they are influenced by social environment. From the moment of birth, babies are treated according to gender by their parents. For example, in the case of clothing, baby girls are dressed in pink color and boys in blue colors. Furthermore, girls are given dolls and boys are given cars, trucks and building blocks. Additionally, babies, boys and girls, are educated in different languages when they begin to talk. Parents say to their boys 'he' or 'him' and girls 'she' or 'her', and they also say to boys in direct language, but to girls politely. So boys and girls are influenced by their parents. Moreover when these babies grow up, they are taught to have different behavior. Girls are taught to be 'ladylike' and polite and beautiful, and boys to be 'like a man', strong and not to cry. Furthermore, parents also have different expectations of girls and boys. They want girls to be stay with the family at home, but boys to be independent out side. Finally, these days, many parents have tread Gender neutral socialization in many parts. So, I also think that men or women are not made by birth, but they so become by social environment.
